Target Audience:
This training was developed for Attorneys representing parents or children in child protective proceedings and child welfare caseworkers. Othe child welfare professionals may also benefit from attending.
Background and Purpose:
This training is part of an ongoing effort to improve the quality of representation in child protective proceedings. The training will provide participants with an overview of the legal framework governing child protective proceedings in Michigan, including the applicable statutes, court rules, and DHHS policy. Participants will learn the procedural rules, time guidelines, and legal standards applicable to each hearing, as well as receive practice tips.

Is registration required?
Yes. Registration is required and on-site registration is not available. Please do not register to attend this training unless you have scheduling flexibility and have received the necessary authorization to attend. Excessive nonattendance without prior cancellation will result in limited access to future CWS training events.

Can I update my registration information?

Do I have to print and bring my registration confirmation to the event?
No. There will be a sign in sheet at the SCAO-CWS registration desk outside of the meeting room.
The name on the registration doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?
No. Please use the attendee's name only.
When do I receive a Certificate of Attendance?
All attendees will receive a Certificate of Attendance via email within one week of the training. The certificates are for proof of attendance and tracking of participation hours.
What attire do you recommend?
Room temperature can fluctuate throughout the day. Please plan accordingly and dress in layers.
Is food provided?
Lunch and coffee will be provided to participants; however, due to grant restrictions, we are unable to provide breakfast or snacks. Additional meals and snacks are the responsibility of the participant.

The Child Welfare Services (CWS) department is part of the Michigan State Court Administrative Office (SCAO). CWS provides assistance to circuit court family divisions on child welfare matters, including child protective proceedings, foster care, adoption, termination of parental rights, permanency outcomes, and data collection and analysis. CWS administers the Michigan Court Improvement Program (CIP), the Foster Care Review Board Program (FCRB), and the training program for the Governor’s Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect. CWS provides numerous multi-disciplinary trainings each year on a variety of child welfare issues.
